Description Michael Tremer 2026-10-20 09:24:44 UTC
The aut-num objects in the database of LACNIC (lacnic.db.gz) only have a city, a country and dates, but neither an organisation nor a description, so that location-importer skips all of them. Of the 14404 ASes of LACNIC, only 2 have a name in the database of 2026-10-17, and AS7303 (Telecom Argentina), AS28573 (Claro Brasil) or AS27699 (Telefonica Brasil) are not in it at all.

The RIPE NCC publishes the names of all ASes of all RIRs every day: https://ftp.ripe.net/ripe/asnames/asn.txt

It has a name for 14402 of the ASes of LACNIC, for example "7303 AS7303 - Telecom Argentina S.A., AR". It could be used for all ASes that no RIR has a name for.

importer: Use the names of the RIPE NCC for ASes that have no other name

When writing the database, an AS gets its name from the overrides, then
from the RIRs, and only if there is none, from the RIPE NCC. ASes that
only the RIPE NCC knows, like those of LACNIC, are being written, too.

With the data of ARIN and LACNIC, the database now has 122893 ASes, for
example AS7303 (Telecom Argentina S.A.) and AS28573 (Claro NXT
Telecomunicacoes Ltda), while AS80 keeps the name from ARIN (GE
Vernova), and AS4224 the one from the overrides.

Comment 2 Michael Tremer 2026-10-20 10:45:23 UTC
This has been implemented in the master branch of libloc (d343474, f63de2e, 3ce8049).

"location-importer update-whois ASNAMES" imports https://ftp.ripe.net/ripe/asnames/asn.txt into a table of its own (autnum_names). When writing the database, an AS gets its name from the overrides, then from the RIRs, and only if there is none, from the RIPE NCC.

Tested with the data of ARIN and LACNIC: the database has 122893 ASes, with AS7303 (Telecom Argentina S.A.), AS28573 (Claro NXT Telecomunicacoes Ltda) and AS27699 (TELEFONICA BRASIL S.A). AS80 keeps the name from ARIN (GE Vernova instead of General Electric Company), and AS4224 the one from the overrides.

This will be in the database once the importer with these changes has been running.

importer: Import the names of all ASes from the RIPE NCC

The aut-num objects of LACNIC have neither an organisation nor a
description, so that none of its 14404 ASes has had a name. The RIPE
NCC publishes the names of all ASes of all RIRs, which has a name for
14402 of them.

They are being imported with "update-whois ASNAMES" into a table of
their own, so that they don't get mixed up with what the RIRs say.

This has been fixed in libloc 0.9.20, which has just been tagged. Closing this as fixed.
