Description Michael Tremer 2021-08-31 15:59:19 UTC
By default, many IPFire systems have a root partition of 2GB. ~703 MB of this space is now occupied by /lib/firmware which does not allow much space for the rest of the system.

I searched for other things that occupy a lot of space and could not find anything that is worth moving (boost is 16MB, Python 2 is ~17 MB). The only thing that is worth it is /lib/firmware.

We can simply create a symlink so that nothing else has to be changed and we can automatically move everything in the updater which avoids shipping all files again.

That will give us much more breathing space on existing systems.

Since we do not feature a dedicated /var partition anymore for a long time, I assume there is no necessity for this change anymore. Therefore, closing it - please reopen, if necessary.
